Companies are using drones and special software to plant trees and overcome reforestation pain points. Robotics making reforestation more efficientThe tech-driven company Mast Reforestation uses drones and biotechnology to help landowners restore forestland after wildfires. Another company using robotics to plant trees is Flash Forest, which employs automated drones to restore burn sites and other damaged forest areas. To combat this issue, Mast Reforestation uses its custom-built software as a seed-inventory and seed-collection logistics platform. The software helped Mast Reforestation collect enough seeds last year to reforest about 2,100 acres on Sheep Creek Ranch in Montana.

The lines between climate tech and infrastructure startups have become increasingly blurred. Investments in infrastructure startups over time. Permitting remains a massive roadblock for climate projects and modularity can be one way to "get around some of those hurdles," added Ben Wolkon, partner at MUUS Climate Partners. Modular tech can also be distributed and containerized, with some startups hoping to roll out with partners on-site. It's not just industrial startups that are going modular and distributed — it encompasses carbon capture, water filtration, food systems, and energy, said Regeneration.VC's Hoffman.

Today, NATO's naval power is far superior to Russia's. NATO may dominate the oceans, but that may not be much help if Russian tanks invade the Baltic States or Poland. Or more specifically, use naval power to scare Moscow into allocating its scarce resources to defending its huge coastlines rather than invading neighbors. "Rather than naval combat per se, the purpose of Russian sea power is to ensure that the Russian state can compete and engage in conflict safely and effectively," the essay said. In 2024, the fear is that NATO ships could launch long-range guided missiles at the Russian heartland.

AdvertisementFollowing a diet that mimics fasting for five days a month appeared to reverse people's biological age by two and a half years on average in a study. These factors can be used to measure biological age, the authors of the study published January 20 in Nature Communications, said. While chronological age refers to how many years someone has been alive, biological age is a measure of how well cells and tissues are functioning. On day one of the FMD, participants ate around 1,100 calories, and around 720 on days two to five. Cultivating a sensible exercise habit could achieve the same or even better results, Clancy said, and is maintainable into older age.

Last year, Australia became the first country in the world to legalize clinical prescribing of MDMA, more commonly known as ecstasy, and psilocybin for certain mental health disorders. Elite athletes experience mental health disorder symptoms and psychological distress at similar, if not higher, rates to the general population, researchers pointed out in a study published in the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology. Researchers in the field say that psychedelics are shown to work when treating some mental health conditions. Later, he founded Wesana Health, a biotechnology company which focuses on developing psychedelic medicine for mental health, the most recent being a CBD and psilocybin-based drug. Since her retirement as a professional athlete, Symonds explains that she uses psychedelic drugs for clarity, though not under the direction of a doctor.

Legislation, including the IRA, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the CHIPS and Science Act, has unlocked enormous amounts of capital that bolsters climate tech innovation and adoption. I set out to record the migration routes of silky sharks, named for their smooth skin. Instead, in a story filled with twists and turns, I ended up documenting the rare phenomenon of a shark regenerating a dorsal fin. Silky sharks are commonly found in the open ocean and grow to be 10 feet long. In the many shark photos he sent, I noticed a silky shark with an oddly shaped dorsal fin. AdvertisementBased on the healing rate calculated in my study, we just might see his dorsal fin grow back to 100% its original size.

"I have decided to not participate in the electoral race for President of the Republic," the 35-year-old Garcia said in a statement from the Nuevo Leon government made public by his center-left Citizens' Movement (MC) party. Garcia then became embroiled in a dispute about who would replace him in Nuevo Leon, where his political opponents control the state legislature, which votes in the interim governor. Recent opinion polls have given Garcia around 10% support in the presidential race, putting him behind Xochitl Galvez, candidate of the main opposition alliance.

Scientists from Tufts and Harvard created microscopic robots from human cells. AdvertisementScientists have created tiny biological "robots" from lung cells that they hope could one day travel around our bodies, regenerating damaged tissues and treating disease. Their research, published Thursday in the journal Advanced Science, raises new questions about how human cells assemble and work together. The same research team had previously created similar tiny robots, or xenobots, from cells sourced from embryos of the African clawed frog. AdvertisementAlhough they're created from human cells, Levin said the anthrobots didn't have a full life cycle and so aren't considered as fully-fledged organisms.

CNN —A mural painted by Banksy which first appeared not long after Britain voted to leave the European Union (EU) has been destroyed after the building it was painted on was knocked down. The mural, which adorned the Castle Amusements building, depicted a worker chipping away at one of the 12 yellow stars on the blue EU flag. Then, in 2019, the mural — which had become a tourist landmark in the town, a major gateway into the EU — disappeared overnight after being whitewashed. Now, despite attempts at potentially restoring the work, the building on which it was painted has been demolished as part of a wider regeneration project. Luke MacGregor/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesIn a detailed explanation of the project online, the council said it had not been involved in painting or covering up the mural.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The race to become Mexico's next president has closed slightly, but former Mexico City mayor and ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum still has double the support of her main opposition rival, an opinion poll showed on Monday. Samuel Garcia, who is competing for the candidacy of another center-left party, Citizens Movement (MC), polled 8% support. A poll published in early October had given Sheinbaum 50% support versus 20% for Galvez, although that survey included a fourth, right-wing candidate who did not feature this time. "With the entry of Samuel Garcia as sole MC contender, the presidential ballot has been practically set in stone," Buendia & Marquez head Jorge Buendia wrote in El Universal. Separately, an analysis of several polls by research firm Consulta Mitofsky which stripped out undecided voters and those not backing any candidate showed Sheinbaum with 62.7% of effective support.

CNN —The National Park Service wants to replant sequoia groves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, where wildfires in 2020 and 2021 inflicted lasting damage on the iconic sequoia forests. Since 2018, Congress has been split 50-50, and nine of 31 state governors are now women - up from only one woman state governor five years ago. SET IN STONEThe push that also saw Lopez Obrador opt for gender parity in his first cabinet has ushered in a broader shift that looks very likely to yield Mexico's first woman president next year. Carla Humphrey, an INE commissioner who has helped lead the charge for equal representation, said the watershed dates back to gender parity recommendations enshrined in law in the 1990s. They were buttressed by 2012 changes that meant parties could have candidates disqualified if the rules were not met. Since 2019, Mexico's constitution requires gender parity in all elected positions.

Mexico's former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who was a runner-up to Claudia Sheinbaum in the ruling National Regeneration Movement's (MORENA) presidential primary, holds a press conference in Mexico City, Mexico, September 11, 2023. Afterwards, he had held out the possibility of seeking the presidency with the center-left opposition Citizens' Movement (MC) party. However, this weekend MC closed its register of contenders for its presidential candidacy without Ebrard. He was also a key interlocutor for Mexico's negotiations over trade and immigration with then-U.S. President Donald Trump, and the succeeding Biden administration.
